Soybean in hand

Brazilian soybean nutrition market shows a 2-year growth in sales of ~60%

Kynetec’s FarmTrak soybean nutrition survey recorded a 57% increase in sales in the 2021-22 cropping season compared to the 2019-20 season.

The survey is part of Kynetec’s FarmTrak study, which tracks the soybean nutrition market for conditioners, soil fertilizers, seed treatments, foliar fertilizers, biostimulants and inoculants.

"Despite the exchange rate devaluation of 27% between the two comparative crop years, the market has advanced in cultivated area, number of treatments and adoption for seed treatments and inoculants,"

says Giovanni Coser, key account co-ordinator and agronomist at Kynetec.

According to Giovanni, soil fertilizers used at pre-planting, planting or top dressing dominate the soybean nutrition market. In the 2021-22 crop they had more than 80% share and grew by 50% compared to the 2019-20 crop.

Soil conditioners, seed and foliar fertilizers, biostimulants and inoculants, accounted for the remaining 20% of the market.

Another insight from FarmTrak 2021-22 is the realisation that farmers are now purchasing fertilizers earlier in the season. By the end of April 2021, harvest time, more than 60% of the fertilizer products had already been purchased, compared with the 2019-20 season, where purchases occurred much later throughout the season.

"In addition to the higher cost of fertilizers, driven by the pandemic, raw material costs and the war in Ukraine, the research revealed that farmers are not only concerned with the availability of products, but also in ensuring that they have access to more efficient technologies, such as the aggregation of nutrients into a single granule, protection of urea granules against rapid volatilization and controlled release of nutrients over time, all of which add value to crop production,"

Giovanni adds.

Between 2020 and 2022 the soybean market value for biostimulants increased by 50%. Their adoption rose from 28% to 38% of the cultivated soybean area, equivalent to around 15 million hectares.

As for farmer awareness of manufacturers and products, more than 330 companies and 2,800 products were referenced in the most recent FarmTrak survey, compared to the previous survey where 200 companies and 1,900 products were mentioned.

"This increase is due to more companies entering the market, from granular mixes to foliar fertilizers, as well as biostimulants and inoculants,"

concludes Giovanni.

The research also included insights on:
  • The US$ value of the overall market
  • The US$ value for each sector - conditioners, soil fertilizers, seed treatments, foliar fertilizers, biostimulants and inoculants
  • Key players market share
  • Key products market share
  • Main purchasing channel - Co-operative, Dealer and Direct sales
